about

“With Carly’s new record Ungrounded, I wanted to keep the excitement of Everything Happen For a Reason and take it to a different place.” says producer Tres Sasser. “The writing and sounds on this record are a natural progression in Carly’s sound and are a bit more organic than last time around with a step forward song-wise. Modern 70′s is how I describe what I was going for on this one. The warmth and production of classic rock and roll recordings coupled with todays slightly edgier records. I’ve always been fascinated with marrying those two worlds and I think this record does it perfectly. We added different instrumentation like B3, piano, rhodes etc to make the sound a bit fuller and a bit more natural sounding.”

“Brown Owl studio was introduced to me by engineer Chris Grainger. I had cut some tracks there once and loved the vibe. They have tons of gear and the not-too-big/not-too-small space seemed to be a perfect fit for what we were going for. For vocals and overdubs we moved over to Grainger’s studio, Undertow. A great space with great gear and perfect for cutting overdubs and vocals. Chris gets fantastic vocals and his space is the perfect vibe for that.”

“The musicians were pretty easy to decide on this time. While we had lots of new players like Chris Tuttle (Big and Rich) on multiple keyboard instruments and Chris West playing sax, we still used the core band from the last record. Dan Baird is just so fantastic to work with. His gear is amazing, his tone is amazing, and his stories are hysterical. There’s so much musical history that comes along with Dan. His attitude when he picks up a guitar and the way that comes shining through are an intricate part of Ungrounded‘s sound. Keith Brogdon is the rock we anchor Ungrounded on. This guy played with one of my top 10 favorite bands of all time…Cheap Trick! That’s enough for me to hire him on the spot. But Keith’s knows so much about music, and he plays for the song. His laid back attitude make him a great person to have on any session. I played bass, which I dont get to do a lot these days, and it was a joy to record with Dan and Keith. I learn something new everytime I record. Pushing parts farther, getting better arrangements or trying to get that “perfect” take.”

“The first Carly Jamison album, E.T.H.F.A.R., was pretty straight ahead – two guitars, bass and drums. It was a great introduction to who she is and what she does. With Ungrounded, obviously I knew that we wanted a change and a progression from the last record. Carly’s not an artist that’s going to make the same record over and over. She was on board from the outset to try new stuff, whether it be co-writing songs, adding a horn section, or switching up the band. I didn’t want to rely on what we did last time to define what we were doing this time around. We did some.”

“A big part of E.T.H.F.A.R were the background vocals provided by Olivia Mack and Joslyn Ford-Keel. While they were great, I didn’t want them to be a crutch for Ungrounded. It would’ve been so easy to just throw “soul backgounds” on every song and be done. But Carly and I both agreed that to repeat that would be a mistake. This record is ultimately about Carly’s voice and her songs. So while we do have great backgrounds on Ungrounded, I decided to not use the classic setup we had last go around.”

“Another difference is the instumentation on the record – keys, piano, Rhodes and horns. Horns!!! I kept hearing horn parts and knew that they would figure into a few tracks. Listening back to Superman Fantasy and Small Talk, I’m really happy they made it onto the record. We also used a Neumann U47 mic on Carly’s vocals which really captured her intimate yet larger than life vocal delivery. Another favorite mic we got to use this time around was a Neumann U67. Fantastic mic and it really helped shape our acoustic guitar sections on songs like Small Talk, No Easy Way Out, and Traveling On.

“I’m excited for people to hear this album. This really harkens back to a time when artists made records they wanted to make the way they wanted to make them. It’s rock and roll as an art form and it’s a beautiful thing.”
